This scientist is using a class III biosafety cabinet with a closed front. This type of biosafety cabinet may be called a "glove box". The cabinet is completely closed, isolating the experimental materials from the rest of the room. Large rubber gloves on the front surface of the cabinet allow scientists to work with the experimental materials without risking contamination. An airlock allows materials to be securely inserted into / removed from the cabinet.

Closed-front biosafety cabinets are used in some Safety Level 3 laboratories.
