iGEM Mingdao 2015

"to Burn or not to Burn, Now You have an option"
MINGDAO IGEM 2015
BEGINNING OF THE STORY
In June 2015, a fire explosion occurred in Formosa Fun Coast in Taiwan. More than 500 people injured and 10 dead have been reported. Fire is horrible! What is fire and how to stop it? Fire retardant chemical coatings can resist fire spread but be harmful to wildlife. How can we do? We’ve analyzed the components in fire retardant natural materials such as milk and wool, and been looking for fire retardant protein candidates from data mining in protein database. We found a novel fire retardant protein and created fire retardant bacteria that are confirmed by protein analysis and flame tests. Furthermore, we applied our fire retardant bio-coating to paint industry and textile industry.

Fire kills people and damages property. Fireproof paint provides protection from fire. However, its composition contains halogen elements and/or organophosphates, which are recognized harmful to wildlife. Milk from cow and wool on sheep are natural products, which are found to be fire retardant. We found a novel protein by data mining based on the criteria of high contents of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N), which play essential roles on fire resistance. Finally, we genetically modified bacteria which were examined with the ability to stop fire through flame test. This is what we’ve done in iGEM 2015.
