The University of York is a member of the elite Russell Group of universities and is a dynamic, research-intensive university committed to the development of life-saving discoveries and new technologies to tackle some of the most pressing global challenges. The University opened in 1963 with just 230 students. Since then it has become one of the world's leading universities, carving out a reputation as an academic powerhouse where a clear focus on excellence has secured national and international recognition alongside longer established institutions. Department of Biology, University of York
One of the UK’s elite university biological sciences departments. The Research Excellence assessment (2014) has again placed Biology at York in the Top 10 in the UK and in 1st place for impact outside academia with its research having major influence on environmental policy, industry and health. In teaching, it retains a position in the top five biological sciences programmes in the UK, according to the most widely-used indicators published by The Times and The Guardian and the department scores highly for student satisfaction in the National Students Survey. A leading department for Computer Science in the UK, and is consistently highly ranked in UK league tables and for student satisfaction. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 results ranked York's Computer Science 7th overall in the UK; 5th for impact and 6th for environment. The Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM)
The oldest microbiology society in the UK, serving microbiologists around the world. As the voice of applied microbiology, SfAM works to advance, for the benefit of the public, the science of microbiology in its application to the environment, human and animal health, agriculture, and industry. The Society for Experimental Biology
One of five owner societies working together at Charles Darwin House to strengthen the voice of Biology and create a national hub for the subject. It aims to promote, and increase the influence of, Experimental Biology within the scientific community and society. Santander
Santander believes that the University plays a fundamental role in the knowledge society. Through its Santander Universities Division, it has collaborated with universities for 18 years, providing support for the development of academic initiatives relating to scholarships; mobility grants; research programmes; university-enterprise relations; new technologies; promotion of the Spanish language, and global projects. Santander Universities and the University of York in America (alumni and friends in the USA), have funded generous Santander International Connections Awards to members of the team. The awards were applied for through the Centre for Global Programmes, and significantly contributed towards the travel and accommodation expenses for the Giant Jamboree.
Yorkshire Water
Yorkshire Water manage the collection, treatment and distribution of water in Yorkshire, supplying around 1.24 billion litres of drinking water each day. At the same time, they also collect, treat and dispose of about one billion litres of waste water safely back into the environment. They operate more than 700 water and sewage treatment works and 120 reservoirs and look after 62,000 miles of water and sewerage mains - enough pipework to circulate the earth! Yorkshire Water donated money towards our project and also gave us advice on the wastewater industry.
