| − | <p>Metal contamination in the aquatic environment has attracted global attention owing to its environmental toxicity, abundance and persistence during recent years. Large quantities of hazardous chemicals especially heavy metals and radioactive materials have been released into rivers. Despite the tremendous effort made to find approaches to solving the problem, conventional ways such as precipitation and ion exchange have shown limited efficiency and unreliability.

| − | Nanjing-China iGEM 2015 is working to change this situation. We set out to devise a way to absorb heavy metal pollutants as well as respectively retrieve precious heavy metals, using Bacillus subtilis as bioreactors. We have engineered a metallohandler targeted at lead, gold and uranium. With the feature of producing endospores, we have made it possible for B.subtilis to absorb heavy metal under both benign conditions and adverse circumstances.In a gesture to further improve the efficiency of binding metal pollutants, biofilm and cell surface-display system are applied in our project. | + | |
