In 1952 DNA was described as the carrier of genetic information for the first time.<x-ref>Hershey1952</x-ref> Shortly after that Crick proposed the central dogma that DNA is transcribed into RNA and then translated into a protein.<x-ref>crick1958</x-ref> Since then the role of nucleic acids in modern biology has exploded. Apart from those essential roles, both DNA and RNA with versatile functions were described. For instance first catalytic RNAs that were later called RNA-enzymes or ribozymes were discovered in the early 1980s.<x-ref>cech1981</x-ref><x-ref>Kruger1982</x-ref>
