Metal contamination in the aquatic environment has attracted global attention owing to its environmental toxicity, abundance and persistence during recent years. Large quantities of hazardous chemicals especially heavy metals and radioactive materials have been released into rivers. Despite the tremendous effort made to find approaches to solving the problem, conventional ways such as precipitation and ion exchange have shown limited efficiency and unreliability.

Nanjing-China iGEM 2015 is working to change this situation. We set out to devise a way to absorb heavy metal pollutants as well as respectively retrieve precious heavy metals, using Bacillus subtilis as bioreactors. We have engineered a metallohandler targeted at lead, gold and uranium. With the feature of producing endospores, we have made it possible for B.subtilis to absorb heavy metal under both benign conditions and adverse circumstances. In a gesture to further improve the efficiency of binding metal pollutants, biofilm and cell surface-display system are applied in our project.

+
In addition, we design a unique device for heavy metal absorption. We want to encourage future industrial companies to join our project by applying this device in sewage purification and it will definitely benefit larger community.

We want to share our experiences and perceptions in synthetic biology with associate fellows and we sincerely hope that it will be of some help to newcomers in this field.

We encourage you to put up a lot of information and content on your wiki, but we also encourage you to include summaries as much as possible. If you think of the sections in your project description as the sections in a publication, you should try to be consist, accurate and unambiguous in your achievements.

iGEM teams are encouraged to record references you use during the course of your research. They should be posted somewhere on your wiki so that judges and other visitors can see how you though about your project and what works inspired you.
