<p>Last year, Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province, China, suffered from serious tap water pollution caused by benzene leaking into the drinking water source. Although it happened in April, 2014, citizens in Lanzhou are still in the dark about the safety of their drinking water. If you look at the whole world, it is easy for you to find that the whole world is in a nightmare of water pollution. Water pollution accounts for 80% of all infectious diseases reported by WHO. World-wide around 1.1 billion people lack access to improved water sources. There is no doubt that millions of people care about the water quality and are eager to know whether their water is safe and available.</p>

   The survey in China was carried out both online and offline. We used an online survey website and collected 148 effective questionnaires. We also got 136 effective paper questionnaires in Lanzhou city. As to the English questionnaire, we put it on the surveymonkey website and promoted it by Twitter, WeChat and other media to get more data. Finally, we recycled 85 effective questionnaires from 6 different countries (Australia, Canada, USA, Japan, Portugal, Singapore) located in four continents. All of these countries belong to developed country.

      <p>Xuejing Du is one of the student leader of group members in our project. His interest is microbiology and behavioural sciences. It is he who has recruited the key members of this team and has brought a new concept to MFCs. He not only wrote over the 80% of the paperwork but also has done 90% of the artwork for wiki, poster and uniform. Human practice, which we thought a tough, sophisticated burden, was carried by him. The live demonstration experiment is easy but useful and interesting, and is a novel approach to public education in iGEM.

The LZU-china iGEM 2015 team consists of 7 graduate students, 18 undergraduate students and 7 instructors. All the work was completed by the student members.
Our work can be divided into 12 parts and each is represented by a unique icon, which is shown as below.The specific contribution of each member is displayed in their personal individual resume(See details in STUDENTS Tab).

Xiao Zhang

Xiao Zhang majoring in bioinformatics and microbiology is a master degree candidate studying in State Key Laboratory of Grassland Agro-ecosystem, Lanzhou University. As the captain of our team and the co-inventor of our novel device, he conceived and designed the entire MFC system. His versatility has great value for us to finish our project. He is really keen on science research, especially interested in functional genomics. So far, he has taken part in several research topics, and their scientific achievements were reported in 3 different SCI papers.

Qi Wu

Chariness patience and happiness, she is Qi wu, a second times iGEMer. As co-captain this year, She is in charge of logistics and finance. This is a totally different experience from last year and she learned a lot.

Haotian Wang is a junior student majoring in bioscience. He is a fan of Liverpool F. C. Being a good striker used to be his dream while he is now a sideback. He is so interested in synthetic biology that he always reads some articles before watching games. He constructed some of our parts.

Xuguo Wang

Xuguo,Wang.As people say, guy who learning computer always a geek, yes, he is. He is a graduate student of Lanzhou University, he is learning linux kernel, besides this, he likes making some interesting electronical device, and like Quadcopter, like transform the Raspberry Pi to control his home's something. Well, that is very interesting. He is dreaming to contribute the linux kernel code, and working for this. He is a keen on computer algorithm, and hope someday, can make his own algorithm.

Zhengjun Chen

(1985- ), male, is studying at Lanzhou University and pursuing a doctor's degree in microbiology. His main research interests are environmental microorganisms, and two papers have been published in SCI. He is also an adviser of iGEM team of Lanzhou University.

Rong Xu

born in July 1987, is a doctor candidate studying in Lanzhou University. She is an expert of heavy metal reduction and cellulose degradation using gene modified bacteria and she does enjoy her researches. Moreover, she helps us with her enthusiasm overcome many kinds of problems about our project. So we believe that she is one of the best advisors in our team-LZU CHINA to attend this competition.

Xuejing Du

Xuejing Du is one of the student leader of group members in our project. His interest is microbiology and behavioural sciences. It is he who has recruited the key members of this team and has brought a new concept to MFCs. He not only wrote over the 80% of the paperwork but also has done 90% of the artwork for wiki, poster and uniform. Human practice, which we thought a tough, sophisticated burden, was carried by him. In addition, he has designed a questionnaire and made a survey about people's attitude towards sewage treatment and the use of microbial fuel cells in China and UK.His creative ideas help us vastly. Now, he is preparing for the presentation in order to help our team to attend Giant Jamboree in October.

Yaxin Pei

She is a master majoring in environmental microbiology. She like her major and would like to spare no effort to do the project which she is in charge of. Her hobby is reading, listening to music, doing yoga. If you meet her at first time, you may think she is silent. But once you get to know her, you’ll find her an aggressive person and like to joke around with people.


Zhengdong Zhang

Amongst all the members struggling for our project, I rank as those busiest guys. My name is Zhengdong Zhang, working like a dog, dressed as a dull nerd. Not am I clever, but the reason why I had been busy was just I have few hobby. Like many of our team, biology science is my only lover.

Feifan Xu

My name is Feifan Xu, a junior student. It is my great honor to become part of iGEM LZU-China 2015. To be honest, I am a diffident guy more or less. So work like electrophoresis PCR or other molecule experiment are quite suitable for me. My primary job is parts construction. Besides that, the measurement of part expression quantity and a little MFC work is also my duty. I like swim in my free time. I love computer games too. After the experiment of the passing year, I find out a truth. The only failure is give up, if you keep fighting, hope is coming.

Fei Deng majors in biology and he seems like a serious guy. Indeed, He is strict with lots of things, such as the operations of our experiments. But he is an easygoing man in daily life. He likes a lots of activities including playing football, reading books. While he said that he cannot tell us what he loves most. In this program, he constructed some parts such as part K1755003 and examined some parts to verify that they can really work. Besides, he wrote some text for our wiki.

Liu Yang

Her name is Liu Yang, a junior student majoring in life science. As an outgoing girl, she likes travelling in nature. With the ardent love of synthesis biology, she constructed the part and detected its work in MFC for our team this year. Although she failed a lot, she never gave up but continued working and eventually overcame all the tough things. She’s a girl of real strength.

Mengna Yao is a junior student who loves life sciences so much that she ‘s always happy as long as in lab. She did some parts’ work , made booklets and assist in designing poster and wiki. She likes watching anime, being eager for anything unusual. She’s a patient and honest girl, mild and energetic.

Yu Chen

Yu Chen, undergraduate student of biology in Lanzhou University, has a great enthusiasm in doing experiment. As a member of the 2015 iGEM team of Lanzhou University, he devotes himself into making parts and MFC. He likes reading, film and animation, he also likes to play table tennis with his friends in his free time.

Huzi Cheng

Huzi Cheng designed both the visual looks and logical struct of our wiki. He also in charge of building, uploading and making sure it can works well and being attractive to viewers.He designed our annual logo ,also.He joined the visualization and the fitting of our data.

Hello,I am Tianyi Shao majoring in Chemistry from Lanzhou University.I don’t mean to exaggerate how splendidly our project performs in that Micro-Holmes as a pollutant detector is pragmatic and useful in every corner of this contaminated world.Three other partners and I are primarily in charge of the construction and operation of the MFCs,and collecting the data for an experienced formula that has widely applicability.I went to Japan for communication with top Japanese iGEM’s undergraduates in this summer and we all enjoyed this kind of opportunities to share our precious ideas.I am looking forward to having a brainstorm with you coming from all over the world in Boston.

Jinjin Tong

Hi, I am Jinjin Tong, an optimistic, active and sunny girl. I am a junior student majoring in life science in LanZhou University. In our team, my main task is to operate the Microbial Fuel Cells(MFC), collect data, and analyze data. I've grown a lot during preparing for the iGEM. After this summer vacation, it's going to be my last year of staying in LanZhou University. I hope I will enjoy every minute of every day with my friends and partners.

I’m Ningning Yao, major in biology from Lanzhou University Cuiying Honors College. It’s my great honor to take part in iGEM as I am enthusiasm in life science. In the past half year, I made porin, constructed k1755003, joined the communication with some universities in Japan and accomplished the previous work of interlab. I also borrowed some experimental material from Jilin University, Nanjing University and Huazhong Agricultural University. Xinyu Zhou

I'm Xinyu Zhou. An outgoing boy who loves anime very much major in biology in Lanzhou University. I like iGEM 'cause it's very creative and we can introduce our new ideas in it. This year in our team I was building part with my partners, also I took part in the human practice and what's more, I'm the lecturer of LZU in the meet up with HokkaidoU, KAIT as well as TokoyoTech in Japan.

Ning Chai

I’m Ning Chai, a girl loves nature and is keen on plants. During the time after joining in iGEM, I spared every free time in lab. However, when I have some break time in the lab, I often listen to the pop music or read some English magazine. By the way, Durarara was watched after setting the PCR of RibB in the break time. Now, you must know some of me.

Huyuan Feng

Vice dean Prof Huyuan Feng：Prof. Huyuan Feng, Doctor of philosophy graduated in Lanzhou University, as the Vice Dean of School of Life Sciences, Lanzhou University, China will lead this team. His present research subject is microbio strains living on Dunhuang Mogao Grotto and he devotes all his enthusiam to the study of protection of the historic treasure of the world - Dunhuang Frescoes. He is the ruler of us for the reasons that he is not only a professional expert of our topic but also an intelligent guide of all team.

Jinbo Yang

Prof. Jinbo Yang, Doctor of philosophy graduated in Shanghai Research Institute of Biochemistry is also a member of Cuiying Scholar. He once worked as Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Research Associate Staff, Adjunct Staff and finally became a Consultant Staff in Lerner Research Institute, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation since 2001. He is an expert of tumor treatment and synthetic biology, and in 2013 he was the adviser of LZU-China in iGEM contest.

 

 

Xiangkai Li

Prof. Xiangkai Li: Prof. Xiangka Li, PhD of microbiology in the University of Oklahoma, is also a member of Cuiying Scholar. He worked as a postdoctor fellow in Baylor College of Medicine in America when finishing his PhD. And after that, he has been a professor in microbiology and doctoral advisor in Lanzhou University till now.

Qiang Qiu

Prof. Qiang Qiu, born in may 1982，Weinan ShannXi, he gained Bachelor Degree and Doctor Degree in Life Science College of Lanzhou University in 2004 and 2011. Up to now, he has worked in State Key Laboratory of Grassland Agro-Ecosystem, College of Life Science.

 

 

Yongxing He

Prof. Yongxing He, bachelor of life science and doctor of molecular and biochemistry in University of Science and Technology of China, went to university of California ,Berkeley in 2011 for his postdoctor fellow in biophysics. When finishing postdoctor, he has been a professor in Lanzhou University till now.

Zhenmin Ling

Dr. Zhenmin Ling，Doctor of Fermentation graduated from Jiangnan University. His present research subject is gene engineering microorganism and industrial enzyme fermentation. He is one of the team instructor of our topic.

School of Life Sciences



The School of Life Sciences at Lanzhou University has a long history. It originated as the Department of Botany and the Department of Zoology of National Lanzhou University, which were founded in 1946 as the first departments of life sciences in western China. After several generations' efforts in over sixty years, the School of Life Science is in a good development trend in many aspects, such as faculty and staff, discipline construction, teaching and researching, and local service. Basing its scientific research on the cold and arid environment in western China, the faculty has made great achievements. The School of Life Sciences is active in international collaboration in order to create an open and supportive academic atmosphere, extend academic horizons, and improve the faculty and students' ability in research and creativity.
