Project Description

+

In our project, we will re-engineer the production of artemisinin in E-coli to hopefully provide a cheaper option with which to fight malaria. The disease is caused by the parasite, Plasmodium, and is transmitted in the bites of Anopheles mosquitoes that have picked up the parasite from other recently infected animals they have fed on. When left untreated, malaria can be fatal, disrupting proper blood flow and impeding the functions of vital organs in the body. The disease claims over 600,000 lives a year. Most of these lives are in poor underdeveloped regions, where people are unable to afford the drug.

Synthetic artemisinin is perhaps the poster-child achievement of synthetic biology. Our team will work with artemisinic acid producing e-coli cells, obtained from Amyris, with the support of Zagaya. By expressing Dbr2, and other dehydrogenases in the artemisinin metabolic pathway we hope to improve the efficiency of artemisinin production. We have synthesized the bio-bricked components of the system, which should allow for an easier engagement with research on the topic in the future.

Combating Malaria with Synthetic Biology

One of the deadliest diseases in human history, malaria now claims over 600,000 lives a year.

Our mission is to investigate the production of affordable antimalarial drugs by the means of synthetic biology. We are working with artemisinic acid producing E.coli cells obtained from Amyris, with the support of Zagaya.

We have constructed biobricks to take advantage of an alternative pathway in artemesinin synthesis. This pathway allows for the production of dihydroartemisinic acid, a direct precursor to artemisinin.

This method has the potential for larger and cheaper artemisinin production in the future.
