Human Practices

Introduction

Whether Tuebingen is a town with a university, or a university with a town is debatable. What is fact, however, is that around a third of Tuebingen’s inhabitants are students. And where students are, there are many alternative ideas and strong political ideals, which are expressed very loudly. Maybe because of this, Tuebingen has been one of the few cities in Germany governed by the green party.

However, even though the conditions for research in Tuebingen are very good, it is not an easy place for research in the biological or medicinal fields. Genetical engineering and animal experiments are very strongly criticised. Of course, these are not problems specific for Tuebingen. On the one hand, people are easily influenced by those with the loudest opinion and what is published through the media, which often contains half-truths or outright wrong facts. On the other hand, the communication and information of those people not directly involved with this kind of work is lacking.

Because of this, the iGEM Team Tuebingen wants to build a bridge between scientist and the public. To accomplish this, we participated in the scientific theme congress “RE-ENGINEERING LIFE oder Wollen wir unendlich sein?” (“RE-ENGINEERING LIFE, or Do We Want To Be Infinite?”), organised by the Theatre Freiburg. We further organised two events to target different audiences: The Synbio-Day, and School Class @ Lab.
