Students

Hi~ I am Bill, a year 4 student studying Bioengineering. Enjoying the process is my life attitude. I keen on expose myself in some unfamiliar environment to get away from the humdrum life. Not only can this provide a suitable scenario for me to explore myself, but also a starter for leaving or broaden my comfort zone. Genetic engineering is a fascinating field for me. DNA sequences hide the secret of biogenesis. Through iGEM, I can have a glimpse in this field and this experience would become soil for me to incubate native ideas in the future.

Hello! I’m Aruna and I’m a third-year student in Applied Biology. My main role in the team is to research the biosafety aspect of our project while simultaneously performing lab work. The iGEM experience has been a transformative experience and a great learning opportunity. I am glad to have been able to contribute to the team and to our project.

I am Ava, a Year 3 student majoring in applied biology. Being a researcher in the field of biology is my dream and personal goal. I enjoy the process of finding scientifically an answer to a question. The iGEM Competition is an invaluable opportunity for me to acquire more research experience in the field of synthetic biology.

I am Year 3 Applied Biology student, Effie. I am a good listener and welcome to share anything with me. iGEM provides me a valuable chance to learn basic synthetic biology and meet great people. Turning ideas into something real is also a new learning experience to me.

I'm Esther, a Year 3 student majoring in Applied Biology. I enjoy studying genetics and being a musician in an orchestra. Both music and genetics fascinate me because you'll always be surprised by the result when you think out of the box.

I am Jeanie, a year 2 student from applied biology. Biology is something fascinating. I hope to apply what I have learnt from class to the real life, so I joined the iGEM competition. Hope that our team will get a prize in the competition.

I am a year 3 Applied Biology student. I have interested in Biology because it always has amazing and fascinating discoveries. What I am interested most is how to apply those special animal characteristics to a commercial products. I believe iGem can provide a foundation knowledge of synthetic biology as well as a useful laboratory techniques. It is no doubt that iGem will be my greatest success in my university life.

Hi, I am Ma Lee. You call me mary as well. I study applied biology which is quite amazing! Joining iGEM, I have an opportunity to gain my experience of doing lab. It will be a great memory for all of us.

Hi, I am Siu Ho Ming. The opportunity to participate and be a part of CityU iGEM team has always been worthwhile and valuable. Science has no limit and because it has no constraints, therefore I have particular interest in discovering and learning whatever my curiosity brings upon me. Innovative thinking and creativity are like sugars to coffee, they are the major components that make Science ‘science’. It is definitely my honor to work with my team over the past few months which we stand by each other through thick and thin. Nothing would be ever made possible without everyone’s contribution.

I’m Peter, a year 3 student studying applied biology. Nothing can fascinate me as much as life science. Countless human inventions and designs are inspired by nature. To me, the most compact natural storage system is genome. iGEM provides me an opportunity to hold our own project and modify this product of our mother nature. I appreciate that and would do my best on lab work and making wiki page.

Yo! I'm Rocky

I am a third-year bioengineering student. It was such a meaningful summer with the other CityU 2015 iGEM team members. Putting what I have learn to good use is the most content thing for an engineer. I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge and hands-on experience. These are things that benefit for my whole life.

Hello! I am Tommy. This is a very precious opportunity that we can gather people who share similar interests in improving our daily lives together into a team - a team which cares for each other while exploring and learning. The iGEM competition means a lot to me. Not only am I able to apply my knowledge from school in real life, the experience in working as a team and communicating with others is priceless. There is absolutely no way that they will be lost. It is my belief that exploring different things is the only way to improve oneself and I am very glad that I have been given the opportunity to be one of the team members of the CityU iGEM team this year.

Instructors

Dr. Richard Kong is the Associate Professor in the Department of Biology and Chemistry at City University of Hong Kong. His research interest is on the application of DNA-based technologies to develop novel risk assessment and bioremediation tools to address problems related to diverse aspects of pollution in the marine environment. He plays a major role in coordinating the iGEM Team, providing the necessary guidance, training and support to all the iGEMers.

Dr. Chiu is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at City University of Hong Kong. He is interesting in teaching students especially on technical skills in biomedical research. His research focuses on the mechanism of the choice in cell fates in mammalian cells and the cellular functions of transcription factor AP-4 during development and in cancers.

Dr. Lau is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at City University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on the RNA biogenesis in infectious diseases, in particular those pathogens found in Hong Kong. He enjoys talking and asking questions about science. His role in iGEM team is to coordinate and provide support to the students.

Hi!I am a fresh graduate from City University of Hong Kong Applied Biology program. Currently as a research assistant in Dr Richard Kong’s lab. My duty is to ensure the iGEMers can get all the necessities for their experiments and to give technical support when they encounter difficulty. It is awesome to work with all the iGEMers and I really enjoy every minute with the team. I hope my limited experience in biology research can help the team and make things a little bit easier.

I am a year 3 student majoring in Applied Biology. Participating in this competition realizes my dream of putting knowledge acquired in lessons into practical uses.I think my strengths include giving ideas, presenting in front of a crowd and keeping my team happy. I love my teammates. CityU iGEM 2014 would not be possible without any of them. Lastly, in my philosophy, the world is beautiful, and the people are gorgeous. Why not live with and enjoy both the good and bad?

Ciao a tutti! I’m Maria. I love to explore innovative stuff and to apply science concepts to improve human lives. This is the first time I get in touch with synthetic biology and I find it a very fascinating field to explore. In the iGEM project, I help my team to build the wiki and construct a gene cluster of fadD and fadL. I am also the presenter in our team. My life isn’t all about science, I’m passionate about music (blues, rock, rap…), website design, water sports (surfing!!!) and travel.

Natural history aficionado, freelance artist/writer, fresh graduate from the City University Applied Biology program and currently working as a research assistant.
