Human Vagina contain 108-109 bacteria per gram vaginal fluid. More than 90% of these bacteria is Lactobacillussp. which is commensal in human vagina.
Imagine if we engineer the Bacteria to be able to express spermicidal protein.
The bacteria would be able to express spermicidal protein on demand and stop expressing the protein on demand too.
This bacteria would be inoculated in the vagina... Thus, the bacteria would constitutively express the spermicidal protein. The bacteria would decrease sperm viability andinhibit sperm motility. This would cause the woman to be in contraception state as sperm came in contact with vaginal fluid is inhibited. If the protein expression system not interrupted, the woman would always be in contraception state.
If the spermicidal expression system is interrupted, the bacteria would stop expressing the protein. Thus, the sperm in the woman’s vagina would be viable and motile again.
What we aim is to increase the convenience using contraception, thus increasing the number of participant of the national contraception program. With our device, once inoculated in the vagina, the user does not have to worry about unplanned pregnancy for life, as the Lactobacillus sp. Keeps expressing the spermicidal protein until switched not to. To be fertile, the user only have to apply substance that switch the direction of the toggle switch. With these, user would be able to “plan” the pregnancy before, and reducing the unwanted pregnancy. |
