Armstrong is currently facing a problem with the build-up of starches in their system. This buildup results from their decision to manufacture ceiling tiles made mostly from recycled material. The starch buildup creates problems with unwanted bacterial growth which is expensive to fix and leaves a foul stench in the air. The consequences of Armstrong’s eco-friendly endeavors are costly and discouraging. Our team is using synthetic biology to eliminate these consequences in hope of not only relieving this burden from Armstrong, but to show future companies that switching to eco-friendly systems doesn’t have to come with drawbacks.

Human Practices

iGEM teams are unique and leading the field because they "go beyond the lab" to imagine their projects in a social/environmental context, to better understand issues that might influence the design and use of their technologies.

Teams work with students and advisors from the humanities and social sciences to explore topics concerning ethical, legal, social, economic, safety or security issues related to their work. Consideration of these Human Practices is crucial for building safe and sustainable projects that serve the public interest.

Human Practices Overview

Education and Public Engagement

This section of our Human Practices details our community outreach to local companies and presentations of our project to high school and middle school students.

Sustainability

This section of our Human practices explains how our project is a sustainable solution that is long term and environmentally conscientious.

Basic Research

This section of our Human practices goes over other possible applications of the technologies, ideas, and information explored in this project.
