Team
Here are the 3 Team components:
We are Macquarie_Australia
Yes that’s right - we are from the land down under. In the Southern Hemisphere it is not only cylones that run the opposite way, our Summer break runs between December - February. Alas our Winter break (29th June - 24th July) was the only time that we could dedicate to iGEM outside of semester.
We are not your typical iGEM team. This is partly due to team membership being integrated into coursework. Our instructors Louise Brown and Robert Willows wrote a journal article about the strategies and challenges for iGEM teams in the Southern Hemisphere. For a copy of this article "Training the Next Generation of Synthetic Biologists – iGEM" in the journal Australian Biochemist click here [PDF 298 KB].
Macquarie University
Our institution is renowned for its interdisciplinary research, teaching, highly-skilled graduates, and first-class facilities. Macquarie University was founded in 1964 by the New South Wales State Government and was the third university to be founded in the metropolitan area of Sydney.
In 2014, Macquarie University celebrated its Golden Jubilee, commemorating 50 years of always challenging traditions and finding innovative ways to encourage education and research.
The North Ryde campus is home to the state-of-the-art Macquarie University Hospital, as well as the Macquarie Graduate School of Management. Macquarie University has recently invested in infrastructure to offer students and researchers the best technology and facilities such as the Australian Hearing Hub, a student-focused building called MUSE, and a sustainable Library featuring a robotic book storage and retrieval system. The University’s Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences is a proud supporter of our undergraduate research project.
Our City - Sydney
Home to the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales. Sydney is located on the East coast of Australia and has a wide array of experiences to offer - from bushwalks along the Harbour to relaxing escapes in the Blue Mountains, from scaling the Harbour Bridge to swimming at the iconic Bondi beach.
