The Project
What we do
Overview
The sets of activities in P&P represent all the features achieved by an iGEM project. Thinking of this, the Team iGEM UFSCar-Brasil realized innumerous actions that explored the different visions of Bug Shoo. We have a special motivation during our works in Policy & Practices, an accomplishment that reach the different topics and problems about dengue, and propose satisfactory and executory solutions. Thus, we realized since activities in a poor community, until a contact with São Carlos City Hall, helping the public service. We also transited for educational arena (sphere), promoting an interaction among academic community and the basic education, covering administrations sectors in UFSCar and looking for different ways to earn money. We related interactions with another Brazilian Teams and the importance to realize meetings, a great opportunity to brainstorms and change iGEM experiences. In addition, elaborated a Law Project that forecast a free distribution of repellents not based in DEET, reducing toxicity of products. Finally, our preoccupation was consider which aspects in our project could contribute in formation of new teams’ iGEM. We expected that our texts, reports and activities could serve as examples in P&P and that cooperate in synthetic biology consolidation in Brazil.
Diseases transmitted by insect vectors, such as malaria and dengue, affect significantly the Brazilian population. In our city, São Carlos, this year in summer the public health organ featured a big number of cases. Working in this problem, our project consists in the development of an alternative repellent of that currently sold in the market and more or equally effective in preventing mosquitoes bites transmitted diseases. The main compound in current repellents is DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), a toxic molecule which at certain concentrations could be lethal, and therefore must have strict control on their use in products. The main characteristic of our repellent is the long duration when compared to other products and the replacement of the compound DEET by D-limonene. Instead, the D-limonene has low toxicity, is highly volatile and present a pleasant smell.
