Our target was achieve and affect teenagers and children with development of a breakthrough activity that go out of our beenchs and take us to improve our artistic side! Come to check with us and have fun!
The city of Sao Carlos lived an epidemic state in this year, how was related in (Wiki Link/Our problem). This way, we though in several ways to awareness the local population and show how we can solve this problem, including the use of synthetic biology. Firstly, we look for the number of cases in each neighborhood in the city, and find which the mains reasons that brought the disease. Among our investigations, the São Carlos 8 neighborhood called attention of our Team, once that the population lives socioeconomic problems besides troubles with the accumulation of trash in unsuitable places. Therefore, we choose the São Carlos 8 as our activity stage, interacting in local that helps the formation of children.
Our first step was a contact with social entrepreneurship projects at UFSCar! We thought that this contact could help us in development of our activity. In this manner, we found the Enactus UFSCar, a group of students that realize educational activities with children in many neighborhood of São Carlos, including São Carlos 8. The Enactus UFSCar, with your social contacts, give us the opportunity to enter in the life of children. Thus, was possible gain a better access in community besides ensure the activity success. The local chose was PROVIM Dom Luciano, a daycare center where children and teenagers stay in morning and afternoon. This place assists in the formation of young people residing in the neighborhood.
Thinking in realize an effective action that interact with public of daycare, our Team organized a theatrical play that addressed the topic: “The super powerful bacteria against dengue”. Over the activity, approached the principal’s aspects of disease, commons and alternatives methods of prevention, besides show the role of Science for our society. Was a great opportunity for find different aspects in bug-shoo, and contributes with another Team iGEM. Among the characters, our repellent bacteria was a highlighted, together with the eater of rubber bacteria, represents by Team Brasil-USP. This moment was a great opportunity of interacting between our team and Brasil-USP, once that utilized our projects in favor of awareness against dengue.
In final of theater, the children was divided in ten groups for the planting seeds of crotalaria Juncea, a plant that helps us in prevent some populations against dengue. The planting of seeds is an alternative method, as well as the effect of Bug Shoo. Crotalaria is a plant of Family Fabaceas, presents yellow flowers with the propriety of attract dragonflies, that realizes the predation of eggs and larvar of A. aegypt. This way, we realized with kids, the planting of this seeds in PET bottles, decreased the discard of solids residues and preventing the occurrence of dengue in this local.
