In the Laboratory Inside the lab the risks our project posed were the handling of the various small molecule substrates. The actions we took to reduce those risks were to work with those substrates in the fume hood, wearing eye protection, and wearing rubber gloves. One of the potential substrates, crotonaldehyde, was extremely toxic, and so the most logical action to reduce our risk from using that molecule was to simply not use it.         ↥ In the Real World The risk our project might pose in the real world is the handling of hazardous substrates. We've discovered non natural substrates to use on our enzyme sensor, but the molecules we've found are somewhat hazardous. As a product, if all of the reagents would need to be self contained and never in direct contact with the user. To reduce such risk, we might want to screen for other less hazardous substrates.
