Vitamine A deficiency



Vitamine A deficiency is common in poor countries but rarely observed in developed countries.

Cause

Common symptoms of VAD are visual loss (night blindness and xerophtalmia), impaired immune function, cancer and birth defects.

Symptoms

It is caused by insufficient consumption of vitamin A and iron deprivation.

Prevalence

between 250,000 and 500,000 children are estimated going blind each year because of a vitamin A deficiency every year. It increases maternal mortality and decrease the efficiency of lactation.

Fortification attempt

VAD is also increasing the severity and the susceptibility to infections

according to the WHO report " Global prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in populations at risk"
