UBC iGEM 2015

UBC Farmer's Market Booth

Our interviews revealed a knowledge gap within the farming community regarding the importance of bees and the impact of CCD on agriculture. To address this, we decided to hold a booth at UBC Farm’s weekly market. In addition, to selling vegetables, fruits, and flowers grown on the farm, the market also features local vendors, bakers, and craftspeople. UBC Farm also offers free tours to interested members of the public. Our booth featured posters on honeybees, CCD, and UBC iGEM’s project, as well as various educational activities.

Our main draw proved to be our trivia game, featuring questions on honeybees, their agricultural impact, and CCD. As incentive to participate, honey sticks from local vendors were given to those who successfully answered our challenging questions after three tries. We were delighted that the trivia game appealed to people of all ages, including many young children and their parents. Over the course of the morning, we engaged with nearly 100 visitors.

Through our booth, we were able to engage with vendors, farmers, students, and members of the general public on a variety of issues. Beyond honeybees and CCD, we also engaged in vigorous discussions on agriculture, student initiatives, and GMOs, resulting in an activity that entered into a true dialogue with our public.
