Revision as of 18:29, 4 September 2015
Team Freiburg 2015
This year’s iGEM team consists of 19 students from many distinct scientific fields including chemistry, physics, biology, informatics and medicine. Our team is supervised by Jun. Prof. Maximilian Ulbrich and Dr. Nicole Gensch, both being part of the scientific staff of the BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies. We also get advice and support from some former iGEM participants who are sharing their experiences and knowledge with us.
Julian Bender (23)
Biology, Biochemistry & Biophysics
Why do I participate in iGEM
Interdisciplinary work on a challenging project
What would I have studied instead
Chemistry or Informatics
Hobbies (before iGEM)
bassoon, cooking, jogging, swimming, reading
Song I would take with me to a desolate island
Julius Roentgen - Bassoon sonata
Sabine Bognar (23)
Chemistry
What would I have studied instead
Economics & Spanish
Hobbies (before iGEM)
dancing, cakes and pastry, foreign languages, swimming and more dancing
Ilona Blank (25)
Biochemistry & Microbiology
Why do I participate in iGEM
To help with my experience as best I can and again be part of a great synthetic biology project
What would I have studied instead
Chemistry or Psychology
Hobbies (before iGEM)
photography, cooking, music
Maurizio Camagna (27)
Biology, Computer Science
Why do I participate in iGEM
Apparently I despise free time
What would I have studied instead
Actually i did study something else: Computer Science. But philosophy would be nice
Hobbies (before iGEM)
magnets, plants, foreign languages, drum & bass, games
song I would take with me to a desolate island
Hybrid Minds - Inner beauty
Julia Donauer (23)
Biology, Biochemistry & Microbiology
why do I participate in iGEM
working with a young team together for a common aim, with a lot of fun
Hobbies (before iGEM)
soccer, tennis, jogging, hiking
song I would take with me to a desolate island
The Bare Necessities [Jungle Book]
Julian Eble (25)
M.Sc. Biology
What would I have studied instead
Music (piano) or sports
Ramona Emig (23)
M.Sc. Biology
Hobbies (before iGEM)
soccer, reading, my friends
song I would take with me to a desolate island
The Bare Necessities [Jungle Book]
What would I have studied instead than what I do?
Physiotherapy or something in the field of sports
Sabrina Fischer (24)
M.Sc. Biology
why do I participate in iGEM
To become a better scientist
hobbies (before iGEM)
painting and drawing, cooking
signature sentence from others
if you need pathos, ask for Sabi
What would I have studied instead
Archeology, Art History
Nicole Gensch
Rabea Jesser (24)
M.Sc. Biology
why do I participate in iGEM
Because it´s a great chance to learn a lot both scientifically and personally
Hobbies (before iGEM)
beachvolleyball, bouldering, travelling & languages
signature sentence from others
I..uh...dings...you know?!
What would I have studied instead than what I do?
something like renewable energies or interpreter would have been nice, or just a gardener...
Luisa Keilholz (23)
Biochemistry, Biophysics, Economics
Why do I participate in iGEM
To be part of a team of young scientist who plan on spending a fun summer while creating the best iGEM project ever!
Hobbies (before iGEM)
running, travelling, reading, cooking for friends and family
What would I have studied instead
Just economics - I'm glad I didn't
Funniest lab disaster
accidentally following the shredded jeans trend after an incident with sulfuric acid and that time the first aid protocol had to be executed because I'd gotten a paper cut
Daniel Kokotek (25)
B.sc Biology
why do I participate in iGEM
"an entire summer in the lab? awesome, no allergies!"
Hobbies (before iGEM)
bouldering, internet
signature sentence from others
I..uh...dings...you know?!
What would I have studied instead than what I do?
nothing academic: probably something like carpenting or mechanics. or nurse
Funniest lab disaster
the usual stuff, like adding water to concentrated acids and blowing it up, smearing cancerogenous dye all over me etc. generally lots of things exploded during our organic chemistry course.
Stefan Krämer (24)
Biology, Biochemistry & Biophysics
Why do I participate in iGEM
I participate as a supervisor to pass on my experience and impressions to other students. Having participated in the iGEM team Freiburg 2013 it is exciting to see the iGEM community from from this very different perspective.
Hobbies (before iGEM)
Playing my guitar, programming, drinking exquisite green and black tee, learning about entrepreneurship
What would I have studied instead
Chemistry, Physics, Informatics... There are too much interessting fields
Funniest lab disaster
I spilled a 50 ml tube of DNA loading dye with a lot of bromphenolblue dye in it al over me and the lab...
Song I would take with me to a desolate island
Hakuna Matata - Lion King
Katharina Moos (24)
M.Sc. Bioinformatics & Systems Biology
Why do I participate in iGEM
I participate in iGEM because I like to work together with others, to have our own project, and to get a deeper insight into scientific fields other than what I study
Hobbies (before iGEM)
volleyball, beachvolleyball, drawing, painting, gaming

We once had fertilized eggs in the lab for a practical course. After the course, one was left and I asked if we could further breed it.
So it was kept in an incubator until it hatched. We called the chick Urmel-Emma. We had her for about 2 weeks, but she got louder from day to day because she was the only chick in our lab and I couldn't attend her all day long. So in the end I had to give her away, but she now lives with a nice farmer family close to cologne.

We had two samples for scanning tunneling microscopy: Graphite and gold. For better pictures you can take sellotape, put it on the graphite and rip it off to order the surface. When we unconsciously did the same with the gold probe, the probe was still there but the gold was on the sellotape -> probe completely destroyed
