Diving into the world of functional nucleic acids

In 1952 DNA was described as the carrier of genetic information for the first time. Hershey1952 Shortly after that Crick proposed the central dogma that DNA is transcribed into RNA and then translated into a protein.Crick1958 Since then the role of nucleic acids in modern biology has exploded. Apart from those essential roles, both DNA and RNA with versatile functions were described. For instance first catalytic RNA that was later called RNA-enzymes or ribozymes was discovered in the early 1980s.Cech1981Kruger1982
